Socks on the Radar
So Chris had his sock fairy, I remember Chi-en's award winning AcaDec speech on socks, and now Neil Gaiman's missing socks. And then I came across this quote:
i *distinctly* remember being told in organic chemistry that the reason socks disappeared was that right socks are built out of right-rotated molecules, while left socks are built out of left-rotated molecules; the reason one of the two disappeared, of course, was that only one form of the molecule was soluble in water. which version was soluble differed depending on the synthetic yarn being used. (wool of course not being soluble in water in either molecular form - a good thing, or there would be a lot of naked sheep roaming the English hillsides.)Am tempted to write a piece now, featuring the sock fairy (who was supposed to be fired because he was the tooth collector, and then the tooth fairy replaced him to great success, so they demoted him to sock fairy instead) whose method of spiriting socks away involves the interdimensional vortex that opens up in the washing machine during the spin cycle. And the little kid who's trying to get his sock back, and so he climbs into the washing machine and ends up in Sockland....
