Every once in a while, the school puts up orange netting like this because it prevents students from cutting diagonally across that lawn and wearing the collegiate version of a social trail into the grass.

I remember once I wasn't looking where I was going when I came out of LeConte, and almost ran straight into the thing. Heh. I wasn't the only one, though, because it was the first day after it had been put up.
